What a stupid mistake!27 Aug

Oiy!

I’ve been having one of those weeks and it’s only Wednesday.  Humour me while I type.

I have an iMac for sale.  Bought it in October 07.  Has Adobe CS3 Web Premium on it.  I (stupidly) did not remove the software and said as much in my advertisement for it.

Obviously if someone buys the computer, they will have to obtain their own licence for the program.  However another VA who asked about the computer decided to give me a not so nice lecture about morals and ethics and the legality of selling the computer with software on it.

And you know what - she was right.

So I deleted the program.  Took it off completely and changed the price.  But I’m still a bit disturbed at the way that this woman decided to rip me a new one in her emails.  I’m not sure what her motivation was in doing so (other than she wanted the iMac but didn’t want to pay my price for it) but the way she came off was high-handed and rude.

So yes, I made a mistake. Yes, I corrected it.  But in the name of getting a bargain, this gal has decided to be rude and snarky.  And that’s her perogative.  I’m pretty sure she’s not my biggest fan right now as she considers me immoral and unethical.  And selling the computer with that software on it would have been.

So the iMac sits behind me right now - waiting for a new home and a new owner.  Without the fancy software.  And I really do feel better and know that my removing the program, I’ve made the right, and ethical, choice.

Cool Tools!23 Aug

I love it when my client’s are proactive and send me things that I haven’t seen or played with yet!

This happened today when a client found Website Grader and did an evaluation on her site.

The report contained a great deal of helpful information on SEO, keywords, Meta tags and so on. Clear and concise, it gave us some great tips to improve our search engine ranking, and I’ll report back as to how they actually work in about a month or so :)

Use Paste from Word - or Else!22 Aug

I had an unusual assignment yesterday - a WP post that was showing the title from one post and partial content from another post. And when you clicked on the title for the post, nothing at all showed - no content at all!

And this was only happening in IE.

How to figure it out?

I started by having a look to see what theme is being used. Since it was a theme with which I am familiar, it made things must easier. I went to the forum for the theme (any theme worth its salt has a support system) and posted my dilemma. And as usual, I received great advice.

Turns out the error was caused by a cut and paste from a Word doc. Word adds all kinds of code into it’s formatting and such, and when this post was pasted into WP, it carried the code with it.

Though Firefox had no problem at all, IE was having fits and causing the above errors.

By removing that code from the HTML view of the post, the problem was solved.

If you need to cut and paste from a Word doc - you can do it a couple of ways. First paste your code into Notepad or TextEdit - any plain text editor. That will strip out the coding.

Or you can use that handy little button on the toolbar - Paste from Word - to insert your text. Super easy and it will save quite a few headaches!
